The Clinical Usefulness of Serum Aldolase for the Diagnosis of Muscle Disease

Abstract
To propose a clinical request guideline for serum aldolase test, we analyzed the results of serum aldolase and creatine kinase(CK) in 75 patients for whom both enzymes were simultaneously requested. Both enzymes were normal in 37 cases(49.3%) and
both
were increased in 21 cases(28%). Aldolase was normal but CK was increased in 2 cases(2.7%).
Aldolase was increased but CK was normal in 15 cases(20%). There results suggest that the additional aldolase measurement was a better indicator for muscle damage than CK alone. In summary, for the diagnosis of muscle disease. CK should be
routinely
measured and if its level falls within the reference range, aldolase is recommended to be secondarily ordered.
